Mipas Validation with the Dlr Falcon

چکیده
The DLR airborne water vapour differential absorption lidar (H2O DIAL) was employed as the core instrument on board the research aircraft Falcon 20 to validate the water vapour products of MIPAS on ENVISAT. During a dedicated campaign which was co-ordinated with the high-flying aircraft M55 Geophysika the H2O DIAL measured the 2-dimensional water vapour distribution as well as aerosol properties on several flights at mid latitudes between 37N52N. Additional goals next to the validation of MIPAS was the intercomparison of the results with several of the passive remote sensing and in-situ instruments aboard the Geophysika and, if applicable, the measurement of smallscale structures in the tropopause region. Several in-situ instruments on the Falcon to measure H2O, O3, and aerosol properties contributed to this task. In this Paper, a representative overview is given about the results achieved during this validation campaign which was based in Forlí, Italy and took place in October 2002.

متن کاملApproach to the Cross-Validation of MIPAS and CHAMP Temperature and Water Vapour Profiles
The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) is a space-borne limb viewing mid-infrared high-resolution spectrometer launched on ENVISAT into polar orbit on 1 March 2002. Water vapour and temperature profiles are retrievable from spectral data in an altitude range from approximately 5 km up to the mesosphere. Complementing the operational analysis of ESA, a non-operatio...
متن کامل4D-VAR chemical data assimilation of ENVISAT chemical products (BASCOE): validation support issues
RESUME A 4D-VAR chemical data assimilation system, BASCOE, is used to assimilate the chemical observations taken by the three dedicated instruments onboard Envisat. For the first time data assimilation takes active part in the validation of chemical atmospheric observations. Here we present the results of the assimilation of MIPAS NLE products and NRT products. It is shown that the MIPAS constr...
متن کاملInteractive comment on “ CCl 4 distribution derived from MIPAS ESA V 7 data : validation , trend and lifetime estimation ” by Massimo Valeri
c) Comparison with ground stations: is the assumption here that the CCl4 profile is expected to be constant with altitude all the way through the troposphere? It would have been helpful to show at least a modelled CCl4 profile to support this. However, the fact that the MIPAS data have a seasonal cycle while the ground station data do not suggests that these must be different air masses, in whi...
متن کاملMeasurement and Validation of Hydrochlorofluorocarbon-22 from the Mipas Instrument
Our retrievals of HCFC-22 vertical profiles volume mixing ratios (vmrs) from MIPAS-E spectral data are presented. Using a retrieval scheme developed at the University of Leicester we have detected a mean global enhancement of HCFC-22 vmrs compared to 1998 values. Latitudinal variations of HCFC-22 concentrations are also detected. A preliminary validation of our HCFC-22 retrievals is presented w...
